My first job at Human Dynamo involved making imitation fire logs for the New Zealand based series ‘Spartacus’. These were made with specific ingredients and structural design in mind to be durable, fire proof, and of course to look as real as possible. It was neccessary for the firelogs to appear they were burning, and yet retain their shape over many shots in multiple days. A ‘Log/branch catalogue’, was created, displaying the types of logs available for purchase, and the client would merely pick which, and how many firelogs they wanted in an order. It was suprising the amount of money and technology that goes in to creating the illusion of a mere burnt log for a scene, considering how irrelevant it would seem. These were also used in ‘The Hobbit’, as well as other movies.
